Abstract

Purpose:

This study was conducted to evaluated effect of diaphragm breathing (DB) on lung ventilation rate of 20 patients with Cronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in Persahabatan Hospital in 2010. 

 

Method: 

This study used a pre and post quasi experimental design using two groups (< 70 years and > 70 years). Under 70 years group consist of 14 COPD patients and over 70 years group consist of 6 COPD patients who were from Medical Rehabilitation unit and from Asthma Clinic of Persahabatan Hospital. Diaphragm breathing program was conducted for four weeks (three times per week). Each patient had spirometry test before and after program to see forced Expiratory Volume in 1 a second (FEV 1). 

 

Result:

The study did not show significant increase (p-value > 0.05) in over 70 years group post DB intervention on FEV1. However, in under 70 years group, it showed a significant increasing in FEV1 post DB intervention. Even though both group had an increasing in FEV1, but in
